Works shown in Galleries 1 and 2 arise from observation; a place visited, a city, an unfinished building, a coast, whilst others begin from a division of the canvas. The emerging forms relate to the four sides of the canvas or paper. They create their own world, one that only has resonances with this one. The shapes appear to have relationships; in some cases figures inhabit them. These shadowy figures are contemporary. Gallery 3, however, is devoted to a series of ancient figures. These pivotal pieces of sculpture from 16th century BC to second century AD have formed our perception of beauty. I have risked using them.
